Limuru Mission Part 1: When God Laughs at Your Plans and Then Outdoes Them
Action Group
Leader: “So, there’s going
to be a 4-day mission—destination to be confirmed—either Meru or Limuru.”
Me (in silent prayer, crossing fingers and toes): “Please Lord,
Limuru. It’s closer. I have a toddler. I’d like to still be married by the end
of this.”
That, dear reader,
is how my journey into divine logistics and divine comedy began.
Initially, the plan
was Meru. Then—hallelujah, glory to God in the highest—the mission
changed to Limuru. My selfish prayers were answered. Don’t judge me. I wasn’t
praying for spiritual elevation through discomfort. I was praying to be able to
go on mission and still make it back in time to catch Cocomelon and Superbook
reruns with my two-year-old.
Fundraising
& Fasting: One Felt Holier Than the Other
We were required to
fast and pray (check ✅),
and also fundraise (umm…
let's talk).
Every message I sent for support was met with the classic Kenyan “Let me see what I can do” or “Niko
na mpango, nitarudi kwako.”
(Translation: I am ignoring you politely but with spiritual flair).
So there I was…
wondering:
“Dear God, will there be a massive ZERO next to my name in the fundraising
tracker? Should I prepare to laugh at Your sense of humor or… cry?”
Let’s just say my
conversations with God are less Psalms and more stand-up comedy meets TED Talk.
But isn’t that what friendship with God looks like? (James 2:23 NIV says,
“Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and oh,he
was called God’s friend. So, I'm in good company.)
I Chose 3 Teams Like a Hero—Then Reality Hit
I initially signed
up for Ushers, Intercessory, and Hospitality. Yes, all
three. What can I say? My inner philanthropist was alive and kicking. But very
quickly, it became clear the hospitality team needed backup. So, I threw myself
fully into the food trenches.
You see, I come
from a family of food lovers. Hospitality is our love language; chapati and
Pilau is how we say "I see you." I figured I’d share a bit of that
warmth, one sufuria at a time.
Cue the Chaos…
and the Holy Laughter
Tuesday
evening: We’re checking
our shopping list. Faith (our hospitality coordinator) was suddenly recalled to
work.
Plot twist.
I’m alone. Utterly alone. Staring at a Google Sheet full of unga and other
mission items.
Enter: My famous
panic-prayer.
“God. Is this that moment in the script where I’m supposed to surrender?
Because spoiler alert,I like plans. Neat, beautiful plans. You know, like Excel
sheets with color coding.”
I laid down. Slept
for 45 minutes. Woke up. Suddenly, I had peace. Clarity. A spark of direction.
By 3:30 p.m., I was
at a wholesale shop buying dry goods. In my mind, this was just a normal
errand. Until… Enter Peterson. A divine team member with impeccable
timing and a car with serious boot space.
Two trolleys,
several kilos of rice, wheat flour and a spontaneous market adventure later, we
were done.
Guess what? Everything fit perfectly into one car. No extra trip. No
drama. Just divine alignment. It was almost suspicious how smooth it went.
That’s when I
laughed. A full belly laugh. Because of course God had it all figured out.
My Big,
Beautiful Lessons (Brace Yourself):
1. God has a
plan. And sometimes… He’s laughing at yours.
I thought my plan was sensible. Efficient. Mother-approved. But God’s plan?
Brilliant, unexpected, and full of grace.
“Trust in the
Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” – Proverbs 3:5 (NIV)
2. Divine help
sometimes comes dressed in jeans and a cheerful attitude.
Peterson, a team member turned-helper, reminded me that God often uses the most
unlikely vessels to deliver peace, strength, and boot space.
3. God funds
what He sends. Period.
I didn’t raise millions. But I had what we needed. Not what I wanted,
but exactly what was necessary.
“And my God will
meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:19 (NIV)
4. Surrender is
not weakness—it’s sacred strategy.
I didn’t lose control. I handed it over. There’s a difference. And in doing so,
I got to see the mission through His eyes—not my checklist.
So, my dear reader…
that’s just Part 1.
Because guess what?
The actual mission story hasn’t even started yet. If this was the before,
imagine what happens when we hit Limuru...
Because when you let God take the wheel, even your detours become divine.
It is wise on one to know their divine calling and keep their lane. My lane is that of - boot space. I hear the Lord telling me that I will own many warehouse business in this land of the living- Nairobi. Thanks for your indirect prayers- I grab an Amen!
